“Understanding Chronic Pain: How Culture is Breaking our Backs” by Dr. Noor Abdal presentation by pain researcher, Dr. Noor Abdal, summarizes and contextualizes some very powerful research findings about what really contributes to Back Pains (especially in women).

Some really great (and shocking!) highlights from Dr. Abdal’s presentation:

  • Up to 93% of people with NO history of chronic low back pain show spinal degeneration

  • Up to 76% of people with NO history of chronic low back pain have a herniated disc

  • Up to 1 out of every 5 people with NO history of chronic low back pain have nerve compression!

  • “Only 15% of people’s [low back] pain can be attributed to a physical cause”

  • “Physical changes in the spine do not cause low back pain”

  • Understanding pain involves more than just the physical pain. You have to look at one’s emotions & thoughts, behaviors, social conditions, and cultural norms.

The presentation content is excellent. The examples she cites from her research are both relatable and fantastic. Check out the video below.
