Hip and Knee Pain Relief

Bob

I wanted to be pain-free in my knee. I wanted to strengthen my knee, stand still, do steps, and do all of the everyday things I wanted to do. I was able to achieve all of that with the team at Health Source PT! I was able to do things that I couldn’t do before.

Tom C.

Staff was able to treat my knee post-surgery as well as related back pain successfully.

Chloe C.

I had a torn ligament in my knee. The problem was completely unresolved and painful when I started visiting Health Source Physical Therapy. The therapists gave me very specific exercises and had plenty of resources to help in my recovery success.

I went here after my knee replacement surgery years ago. They did a fantastic job getting me back to walking and climbing stairs without pain. If you're looking for a place to do your Physical Therapy Rehab after joint replacement surgeries, then I highly recommend these guys. They were great!

I went to Health Source PT after my knee replacement surgery. Everyone in the office is very nice and welcoming. They do a fantastic job, I have great range of motion.

Health Source Physical Therapy has provided physical therapy for me three times since 2007, the first time for back pain, the second for a knee injury, and most recently for shoulder pain. In all three instances, I was in a great deal of pain, and the therapy I received resolved the issues.

Phil H.

I had a problem where I could not get down on my knees and through the treatment and exercises I can now do so without pain. Thank you for the help.

Deborah G.

In July, 2018 I received a total right knee replacement. As my surgeon recommended, I went to physical therapy. I am very pleased with my treatment and help from Jason and Mary and recommend that others give them a try for any physical therapy need they might have.

William K.

I have been here after several surgeries over the years, Knee, Back and shoulder. They are very professional and determined to get you back to a better life.

I have had severe arthritic pain in both knees for quite a few years (a life of sports combined with 3 knee surgeries took it’s toll on my joints), but didn’t want to consider knee replacement yet, so I just dealt with the pain. I have been to PT numerous times after my knee surgeries, and have never had a PT be so thorough and determined to help me improve my knees and reduce my pain. Highly recommend Health Source!

Barney B.

This place is great! Knowledgeable staff. Jason is really knows his stuff. I went in with knee pain and had some relief the same day! They have been helping me through recovery from arthroscopic hip surgery as well.

Beverly G.

I have been going to Portland Health source because of a bad knee that prevented me from walking for exercise. Since Jay and Mary have been treating my knee and teaching me exercises to strengthen my muscles, I am doing so much better.

Laura H.

So glad that I went to HealthSource for an ongoing hip problem. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and they worked around my schedule as much as they could. They were very good about explaining the process as they figured out how to help my particular problem.

Phil H.

When I went down on my knee, it burned like fire. Health source determined my problem was actually in my hip, and treated both the knee and hip with ultrasound massage and exercises to correct the problem. I can now go down on my knee and the fire is gone. Glad this took care of it. Thanks Jason and Jaye for your treatment care.

Hip and Knee Pain Bringing You Down? Physical Therapy Can Help You Get Moving Again

Don’t Let Your Hip and Knee Pains Get You Down Any Longer!

Hip joint pain and knee pain can seriously interfere with your life, especially if you are dealing with both.

Do sharp pains in your hip make it difficult to get up in the mornings, move about during the day, and lie back down at night? Do your knees feel painful, or even feel as if they may buckle underneath you without warning?

Whether you’re experiencing hip pain, knee pain, or both, physical therapy can help get to the root of your problem safely and comfortably, without the need for harmful drugs or surgery. Request an appointment at Health Source Physical Therapy today to get moving again!

How can physical therapy help my hip/knee pain?

Our Portland physical therapists will examine your hip and/or knee for signs of misalignment or structural damage, in addition to examining your stance, posture, gait, and range of motion.

After your physical exam is complete, our physical therapists will prescribe a physical therapy plan for you, aimed at relieving unnatural stresses and strains. They will also focus on normalizing your joint function so you can get back to living life comfortably.

You will be given targeted exercises designed for relieving joint pain and stabilizing weak hip and/or knee tissues. The exercises may vary depending on your condition; for example, research has demonstrated that those suffering from patella pain (kneecap pain) tend to respond better to exercises that focus on strengthening both the hips and knees, rather than just focusing on the knees alone.

You may also be given exercises designed to strengthen the core, including your lower back muscle groups, lower abdominal muscle groups, or pelvic muscles. Core exercises are aimed at straightening your posture and equalizing the weight load on both sides of your body.

Additional specialized treatments may also be added as our physical therapists deem fit, such mobilizations to improve joint movement, or other soft tissue treatments that relieve pain and promote the healing of damaged hip and/or knee tissues.

The physical therapy treatments at Health Source Physical Therapy can help to greatly reduce your hip and knee pain. In many cases, your physical therapist can even relieve your pain altogether, sparing you the need for potentially harmful medication or surgical correction.

How did my hip or knee pain develop?

Pain felt in the hips and/or knees may originate in the joints themselves, but it may also be a result of an underlying condition in another part of the body.

For example, your hips and knees are part of the same kinetic chain, meaning they make up a combination of weight-bearing joints that must function together in harmony in order for your body and posture to function properly.

Therefore, a problem with your knee joint may transmit abnormal forces to your hips, and vice versa. If one part of the kinetic chain is out of balance, stress and deterioration may be placed on another.

Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint that works to support the weight of your upper body, relying on multiple muscles and tissues to keep it mobile and stable so it can function properly.

Your knee is a hinge joint, confined to forward-and-backward motions. Individually, your knees support more weight than the hips, 6 times your body weight when doing a squat. Proper movement of both your hips and knees allows complicated motions giving you the ability to stand, walk, run, and dance without falling over.

Hip and knee pains can be experienced together or separately, but it is important to note that as the old saying goes, your knee bone is connected to your hip bone, therefore what happens with one, affects the other.

What might be causing my hip/knee pain?

Many times, the hips and knees suffer the same diseases, disorders, and injuries. For example, overuse injuries such as tendinitis and chronic muscle strain are common in both the hips and knees because both joints are constantly in use. They are also both subject to acute injuries, such as sprains, strains, and dislocation.

Hip and knee pain can also be affected by referred pain from a pinched sciatic nerve, as the nerve travels through both areas. Imbalances in your stance or gait may cause abnormal stresses and premature wear-and-tear in your hips and knees, resulting in painful symptoms or arthritis.

Some painful conditions may be specific to one joint or the other. Cartilage injuries known as labral tears are specific to hip pain, while inflammation of the bursa sacs known as bursitis is a specific condition affecting the knee joint.

However, painful injuries that cause instability in the hips can also affect the knees. Tight hip flexor muscles and weak gluteus medius muscles can cause the hip to rotate inward without you realizing it. This can cause painful problems such as iliotibial band friction syndrome or patellofemoral stress syndrome, as stress is put on the knee or kneecap.
